Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her mother and grandmother. She is an only-child. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. There, Scott worked two jobs as she was taking classes in secondary education. She hoped to be the high school's English teacher. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of studies and as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of college. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate and co-writing You Got Me. The singer performed at an Roots concert. Later, she secured collaborations artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience performing arts through the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was contracted by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
